265. Toronto Fall Home Show

Get ready to get inspired with this year’s Toronto Fall Home Show, kicking off today and continuing until the 25th. Each year, the Show host celebrities, experts, and exhibitors to help you make your home beautiful, and 2011 is no exception. Highlights include “Runway to Room” where celebrity designers will share their concepts for fashion-inspired living; “The Style at Home Stage, presented by HGTV, with plenty of celebrity speakers; “Destination Renovation” by BILD, where expert renovators give homeowners tips and tricks for successful renovations; and an Exclusive Access Sale where you can purchase fantastic furniture in support of the Toronto People With AIDS Foundation.

264. Lunch Time Live!

September 21, 2011

Take a lunch break and enjoy some of Canada’s best jazz, country, boss nova and rock ‘n’ roll at Yonge-Dundas Square. Starting at 12:30pm and continuing for an hour, this afternoon’s performance will feature the Toronto Tabla Ensemble (TTE). The tabla is typically a solo instrument, but the TTE presents this North Indian percussive tradition as an ensemble performance. Bassist Ian de Souza, multi-disciplinary artist Evan Ritchie, and the Chhandam Dance Company join the ensemble to create an amazing live show that just might make you forget that you have to go back to work for the afternoon!

263. Stitch & Bitch

If you knit, crochet, or felt, and have something to “bitch” about (who doesn’t?!) head over to the Knit Cafe on Tuesday evenings for an old-fashioned stitch and bitch! The Knit Cafe is a crafter’s dream come true; picture high quality yarn, books, patterns and needles for purchase, plenty of room to sit and knit (or crochet) and a cafe with plenty of caffeine and snacks to keep you crafting until the wee hours of the morning (or until 10pm, when the stitch and bitch is over!) If you don’t know how to knit or crochet but would like to learn, the Knit Cafe offers several classes ranging from beginner “crash courses” to advanced sock master classes and sweater design sessions.

262. Toronto Beer Week

Toronto Beer Week is a “series of events dedicated to the celebration and advancement of the craft beer movement.” Highlighting craft beer and their passionate brewers, last year’s Beer Week included local favourites such as Black Creek Historic Brewery, Creemore Springs Brewery, Great Lakes Brewing Co., Mill Street Brewery, Muskoka Brewery and Steamwhistle. Past events have included blind-tastings, beer and food pairings, round-table discussions of beer in Ontario, and much more!

261. Bloor West Village Toronto Ukrainian Festival

The Toronto Ukrainian Festival was born in 1995 as a celebration of the influence of Ukrainian culture in Ontario. By the early 1950s, approximately 84,000 Ukrainians resided in our province, making Toronto the new “Ukrainian capital.” The Festival celebrates the diversity of our city, and is considered one of the premier Ukrainian festivals in North America. By showcasing contemporary professional and amateur artists and performers of Ukrainian heritage, the culture, music, dance and visual arts of the Ukraine is preserved and celebrated each year at the Festival.

This year, participants will enjoy Mandry, the Toronto Ukrainian Festival 2011 feature band; Roman Danylo, the Headlining Standup from Vancouver; Verkhovyna Song & Dance Ensemble from Edmonton; Tyt I Tam, one of Canada’s premium Ukrainian party bands; Suzirya Ukrainian Dance Theatre from Calgary; and the Lemko Tower, all the way from Lemkivshchyna! In addition to performances, the Festival features plenty of opportunities to purchase culture memorabilia, and of course, the chance to sample delicious Ukrainian food!

260. Tet Trung Thu: Vietnamese Mid-Autumn Celebration

Known as the Moon Festival and as the Lantern Festival, Tet Trung Thu celebrates the harvest at the end of the summer. Join in on the festivities at the Harbourfront Centre with a weekend filled with children’s activities, food and plenty of fantastic entertainment. You’ll have the opportunity to close out the summer of 2011 with a bang – in Vietnam Tet Trung Thu is celebrated with lanterns, “lion dances” and special food, so the Harbourfront Centre is sure to be alive with all the sights and sounds of this important festival!

259. Canoe Rides in the Natrel Pond

If you didn’t have a chance to get out on the water this summer, it’s not too late! The Harbourfront Centre’s Natrel Pond is open until October 10th from Wednesdays to Fridays (5pm until 8pm) and on Saturdays, Sundays & holidays (from 11am until 8pm).

For $4 per person, you’ll enjoy a 15-minute canoe ride, including a life-jacket rental. You’ll float along the Harbourfront Centre’s boardwak, taking in the sites and sounds of the city. The Natrel Pond is perfect for the whole family, so pick up the kids from school and head down to the Harbourfront and pretend it’s summer again!

258. CaribbeanTales

September 15, 2011

September is the month for film festivals and this year CaribbeanTales is partnering with the Harbourfront Centre to present the CaribbeanTales 2011 Film Showcase and Market Access Program. Similar to the Toronto Indie, the purpose of the Market Access Program is to allow unknown filmmakers to show their films at the same time as TIFF is in full-swing. The schedule includes a 3-day Incubator, a “speed-dating pitch session” and a Caribbean-themed launch party, all with the puprose of raising the profile of unknown Caribbean filmmakers.

This year’s Film Showcase focuses on Caribbean animation, allowing film-lovers of all ages to participate in workshops, screenings and several other activities which celebrate the film and television industry in the Caribbean. 257. Toronto Independent Film Festival

The Toronto Indie may feature micro-budget and no-budget films, but because it runs alongside the Toronto International Film Festival, it also highlights the best of truly independent films. By operating at the same time as TIFF, the Toronto Indie gives undiscovered filmmakers the opportunity to showcase their films in the city where the key players of the film industry have gathered.

This film festival features independent films from all over the world, while including relevant industry discussions and targeted social networking events. Because the city of Toronto has such a fantastic and influential independent filmmaking community, you can be sure that the Toronto Indie will be an event to remember – it’s an indie film festival by and for indie filmmakers! Screenings take place at the Toronto Underground Cinema.

256. Stonegate Farmers’ Market

Each Tuesday from June until October, the Stonegate Farmers’ Market features locally made honey, cheese, meat, breads, sweets, and of course, locally grown fruits and veggies! Created as a venue where the Stonegate community can gather, the market is complete with entertainers, special events and children’s activities, so bring your friends and family along while you do your weekly shop!
