154. Waterfront Blues 2011

Sit back and enjoy Toronto’s “only genuine Blues festival” as the 7th Annual Waterfront Blues kicks off tonight at 6pm! This free event takes place at Woodbine Park in the popular Beach neighbourhood. You’ll experience top Blues performances from the likes of Larry McCray, Teeny Tucker, Juno Award winners Gary Kendall & Chuck Jackson, great food (including award winning BBQ) a children’s amusement area, and much more!

153. Abstract Expressionist New York: Masterpieces From the Museum of Modern Art

For only 14 weeks, the Museum of Modern Art presents Abstract Expressionist New York at the AGO. This exhibit features an amazing collection of more than 100 masterpieces from the likes of Jackson Pollock, Mark Rothko, Willem de Krooning, Joan Mitchell, and more! Abstract Expressionism was an American painting movement that made New York the centre of the art world in the 1940s and 50s. The exhibit’s unique paintings range from high-energy to quiet and contemplative, leaving visitors with a lasting impression of pieces that changed the course of modern art.

To fully ensure optimum enjoyment of MoMA’s Abstract Expressionist New York, the exhibit is time-ticketed. With general admission fee included, tickets for adults are $25, and can be purchased online at www.ago.net.  The exhibit continues until September 4, 2011.

 

152. Aerial Arts Class

Ever dreamed of flying? Aerial arts may be the closest you’ll come to taking flight without the aid of an airplane. At the Centre of Gravity Vaudeville Theatre & Circus Training Studio, you can learn aerial hoop, silks, or static trapeze from a trained circus professional. Not only will this Wednesday night drop-in class have you ready for life under the big top; you’ll develop core strength, flexibility and confidence as you spend time suspended in mid-air under the watchful eye of your trainers.

151. CFC Worldwide Short Film Festival

Presented by TELUS, the CFC Worldwide Short Film Festival celebrates the creativity and quality of short films. Featuring shorts from more than 80 countries, 250 shorts are highlighted over the five days of the festival, which is accredited by the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences. Winners of the Best Animated Short and the Best Live-Action Short are eligible for the Academy Awards, and Canadian award winners are eligible for the Genie Awards. The Festival also includes the Short Films BIG IDEAS Symposium, which includes seminars, panels and workshops.

149. Toronto Women’s Half Marathon and 5k

Join more than 2,000 women as they run/walk through Sunnybrook Park in support of the Pediatric Oncology Group of Ontario. Not only do part of the proceeds of this race go towards a very good cause, this race is one in a series of Toronto Women’s Runs, specifically geared towards female runners to “motivate and inspire women to come set the pace” while enabling them to “be active, fit and involved.”

Though registration is complete for today’s race, come cheer on the runners at 8am as they kick off the half marathon, and at 8:20am for those running the 5k. Get inspired, and maybe even consider participating in one of the other Toronto Women’s Runs on August 27, 2011, or October 29, 2011! 148. Doors Open Toronto

Doors Open Toronto is one of our favourite events at 365Toronto! If you’ve never experienced this unique weekend, make sure you check it out this year! Today and tomorrow, Torontonians and tourists alike will have the opportunity to explore several of Toronto’s most architecturally significant buildings, buildings that are typically not open to the public – and it’s all free! Last year’s roster of buildings included City Hall’s podium green roof, the Drake Hotel, Evergreen Brick Works, the John St Roundhouse, Kasian Architects, Old City Hall, the Redpath Sugar Refinery, St. James Cathedral, the Textile Museum of Canada, Regis College and many more! You’ll get tours of these buildings, find out about their history, their current use, and even learn about some of the myths/urban legends that surround some of Toronto’s most historic structures.

This shopping extravaganza is ideal for the fashionista who needs to know what will be in for the season, and must get it at a reduced rate! Many vendors sell their designer duds for a deal, so if you’re looking for a new spring wardrobe, this is the place to go!

The Clothing Show is especially well known as Canada’s largest vintage and new independent designer show, so you can be sure to find one-of-a-kind, local designs. Runway shows continue throughout the weekend and a special Century of Fashion Competition display in the Vintage section will make this show way better than spending the day at the mall. The shopping extravaganza all gets started tonight at 5pm and continues throughout the weekend at the Queen Elizabeth Building at Exhibition Place. With similar batting averages and a similar number of wins and losses so far this season, you can bet this game will be an exciting fight to the last inning!

145. Drop-in Clay Class

No matter your skill level, head over to the Gardiner Museum for tonight’s Drop-in Clay Class! You’ll explore the potential of working with clay as professional ceramic artists lead you through the process of hand-building, wheel throwing, decorating your piece, and glazing. This drop-in class is a great way to try your hand at clay before committing to the Gardiner Museum’s weekly classes; each drop-in session is only $15 ($12 for Gardiner Members, seniors and full-time students) with a $5 firing fee (per piece).
