314. Fred Ritchin: Meaningful Media

“Where are our media leading us – politically, spiritually, psychologically? Do we want to go there? How can we influence our own futures via the kinds of media that we create and use?” These are questions that Fred Ritchin, Professor of Photography & Imaging at New York University’s Tisch School of the Arts, will discuss tonight at the AGO. As the author of the first book on the digital revolution and photography and a co-founder of PixelPress, an organization which creates new forms of media and seeks to advance human rights, Ritchin will address meaningful media in an age of digital revolution.

313. Rendezvous With Madness Film Festival

The 19th Annual Rendezvous with Madness Festival began on November 4th and continues through to the 12th, showing feature and short films and videos that address issues of addiction and mental illness. The Festival is presented by Workman Arts, a not-for-profit multidisciplinary arts organization which supports individuals who receive addiction and mental health services in their artistic pursuits. Through artistic media, the organization seeks to promote a greater understanding of mental health and addiction issues.

312. Lucy Tasseor Tutsweetok

Hailing from Arviat, the most southern community on Nunavut’s mainland, Lucy Tasseor uses stone local to her home. Arviat is close to the geographical centre of Canada where the local stone is a tough grey steatite which is harder than steel tools typically used by Arviat carvers. Tasseor created a unique sculpture style by using an axe to chip at this hard stone, allowing the artist to “communicate essential ideas of form and content with a minimum of elaboration.”

The Lucy Tasseor Tutsweetok exhibit takes place at the Art Gallery of Ontario and features more than 40 works by Tasseor from the 1960s through to the 1990s. For more information, go to www.ago.net.

311. The Royal Agricultural Winter Fair

The Royal Agricultural Winter Fair is a staple on Toronto’s event calendar; it has been in existence since 1922! Since then, the Fair has become the world’s largest indoor agricultural and international equestrian competition, drawing more than 340,000 visitors to Toronto. Fair-goers will see over 4,500 large and small animals, agricultural exhibits, shows, activities, shopping, dining and the ever-popular Royal Horse Show.

What is the Day of the Dead? It’s a Mexican holiday when family and friends gather to pray for and remember friends and family members who have passed away. In Mexico the day is a national holiday in connection with All Saints’ Day and All Souls’ Day. Traditions include building altars honouring the deceased using marigolds, sugar skulls, and the favourite foods and beverages of the deceased.

The Regent Park Film Festival is Toronto’s only free-of-charge community film festival, and is committed to highlighting local and international independent films relevant to the individuals and groups who call Regent Park “home.” Key themes of the Festival include inner city issues, immigration, cultural identity and multicultural relationships. “The Festival aims to reach isolated communities throughout Regent Park and beyond and provide a forum for them to engage in critical dialogue on social issues and to enjoy films from all over the world.”

307. SpeakEasy’s Comic Book Show

At the SpeakEasy Comics Show you’ll have the opportunity to meet an eclectic mix of some of Toronto’s talented comic book artists. 306. Orpheus and Eurydice

A modern reinterpretation of the ancient Greek myth, The Canadian Stage Company presents the one-act ballet Orpheus and Eurydice. Choreographed by Quebec native Marie Chouinard, the show features original music by Louis Dufort and was originally created in February 2008 at the Equilibrio Festival in Rome.

Orpheus and Eurydice is the tail of a musician/poet/prophet who enters the underworld on a mission to rescue his wife, Eurydice, who died from a viper’s bite. The one-act ballet “features multiple versions of the two characters and concerns itself with the most intimate manifestations of the human body.”
