139. Inside Out Toronto LGBT Film and Video Festival

Celebrating years of challenging attitudes and changing lives, the Inside Out Toronto LGBT Film and Video Festival exists to support the promotion, production and screening of films made about and by lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgendered (LGBT) individuals. The Festival takes place over 11 days, and includes screenings, panel discussions, artist talks, installations and parties that showcase over 250 Canadian and international film and video submissions.

138. The Railway Children

Based on the 1906 novel by Edith Nesbit, The Railway Children is the tale of three children reduced to poverty after the arrest of their father. Moving from London to a cottage in the country, Bobbie, Peter and Phyllis find themselves living close to the train tracks where they become friends with the local railway porter.

Featuring a real vintage 66-ton steam locomotive, it’s not a surprise that this production takes place at Toronto’s new 1,000 seat Roundhouse Theatre, which was custom-built for The Railway Children’s North American debut! Today’s performances are at 2pm and 7:30pm; tickets for the matinee range from $25 to $69; tickets for the evening performance range from $25 to $140. 137. TSO – A Night at the Cotton Club

Go on a musical journey through the 1920s with tonight’s performance at the Roy Thomson Hall. You’ll experience music and dance from Prohibition-era Harlem with special guests Byron Stripling (trumpet and vocalist), Carmen Bradford (vocalist), Ted Levy (tap dancer and vocalist) and Bill Breithaupt (drums).

A Night at the Cotton Club starts tonight at 8pm; there are also two performances tomorrow, at 2pm and 8pm respectively. Tickets range in price from $31 to $109 for tonight’s performance; buy tickets online at www.tso.ca.

136. Downtown Toronto Ghost Tour

Experience Toronto as you have never seen it before; through eyes “beyond the grave!” Our city’s buildings have seen a lot of history over the years, resulting in a multitude of mysteries, urban legends and ghostly tales. This spooky Downtown Toronto Ghost Tour will reveal the history of some of Toronto’s most eerie landmarks such as Queen’s Park, Old City Hall, and Osgoode Hall, and will conclude with a visit to Toronto’s most notoriously haunted buildings.

The Downtown Toronto Ghost Tour starts at the front steps of the Royal Ontario Museum and begins at 7pm. Call ahead to reserve a spot, as priority will be given to those with confirmed reservations. 134. Toronto Roller Derby: Gore-Gore Rollergirls vs. Smoke City Betties

Roller derby isn’t a thing of the past – it’s alive and kicking (literally) in T.O.! Tonight the Gore Gore Rollergirls face off against the Smoke City Betties, and it all goes down at the Sports Centre Hangar at Downsview Park. In their last two games, the Gore Gore Rollergirls have blown the competition out of the water (and they haven’t lost a game since 2008!), but you can certainly expect the Smoke City Betties to put up a fight after their devastating loss to Chicks Ahoy!

The Toronto Roller Derby League (ToRD) is entirely run for the skaters, by the skaters, meaning that the women you see on the track are the same women that comprise the ToRD’s Board of Directors, coordinate public relations, book halftime shows, and even sell you your t-shirt. By blending athleticism with entertainment, ToRD is proud to “represent a broad range of ages, body types, lifestyles and backgrounds” while promoting accessibility to every roller derby event. All bouts are fun for fans (and soon-to-be fans) of all ages.

Tonight’s showdown begins at 6:30pm. Single tickets are $12.00 online (plus a $1.41 service fee), or get together with a group of friends and buy a “6-pack” of tickets for $75.00 (plus a $3.62 service fee) – but they’re only available on the Toronto Roller Derby’s website until midnight before the day of the bout, so get to tonight’s game early to snap up some tickets at the door (they’ll cost $18 each). If they’re all sold out, check out bouts on May 28th, the semi final on June 11th, or the championship bout on June 25th!

133. The Aleph

Staged by popular demand, The Aleph returns to the Soulpepper stage, starting tonight! An adaptation of a short story by Jorge Luis Borges created by Canadian director Daniel Brooks, designer Michael Levine, and actor/Soulpepper founding member Diego Matamoros, this production was one of 2009’s most loved performances on the Soulpepper playbill.

What is “the aleph?” It’s the first letter of the Hebrew alphabet, and it is silent. It is also the only difference between the word “truth” and the word “death.” In Borges short story, the word “aleph” represents an all-seeing portal; in the production of the play, the aleph is open to interpretation, and the show raises many of the possible uses of the powerful letter/symbol/literary device.

You’re invited to our May Design Talk: Planning for Your Home -The Effect of Colours on Your Living Space! Personal Development and Colour Therapy Expert, Angela Dacey, will teach us how colours act as “food for our soul” physically, mentally, emotionally and spiritually. You’ll start seeing colour in a whole new light!

Thinking of re-painting your home? Are you trying to decide what shade of beige is best for the room you want to re-decorate? We tend to shy away from colour, especially if we’re thinking of selling in the near future. Though it may be tempting to “go neutral” (and if you like to change up your space often, it may even be practical to simply change the colour of the room’s accessories rather than the colour of the walls), but colour adds personality, drama, and a distinct “feeling” to a room. Colour has a definite effect on our mood and outlook on life, but how do you decide which colour is the best for you and your room?

Our May Design Talk will be a fun evening of discovering the purpose of colour when decorating. Learn how the different colours of the rainbow have different frequencies that have different effects on our lives. Find out interesting facts such as why you shouldn’t paint a kitchen blue, why you should use red when suffering with the flu and which colour is the best to help you out of a depression. Angela Dacey, Personal Development and Colour Therapy Expert, will help you find which colour is most important to you in your life right now and explain how to use colour for your best benefit. About the Speaker:

Angela Dacey‘s mission is to help you “Live Life Colourfully.” As an expert in Personal Development and Colour Therapy, Angela helps her clients to understand how to detox their thoughts and feelings using colour as a tool for success.

Angela’s three Journey of Self Discovery courses were developed in 1999 to support and guide people to transform their lives. Through these courses, Angela connects with each person, bringing them to a place of awareness, clarity and positive change, all with the use of colour. Clients include York General Hospital, Southlake Regional Hospital and the Canadian Independent Event Planners. Angela makes regular appearances on Rogers TV shows Daytime and In The Know. Commercial direction, an all-too-often overlooked genre of filmmaking, has produced some of the greatest filmmakers in the last twenty years. David Fincher (Se7en, The Social Network) and Spike Jonze (Being John Malkovich, Where the Wild Things Are), are both products of the commercial direction world. Highlighting the best in music videos, ads and short-form filmmaking, the TIFF Bell Lightbox will showcase Unsigned Directors, music video production, and special guests including independent director A.J. Bond and executive producer of Radke, the Toronto-based commercial production house.

129. Monday Night’s Food for Thought: Get 86’d with Ivy Night.

A self-described “hotbed for culture,” the Drake Hotel hosts events every night of the week, including tonight’s event, “Food for Thought: Ged 86’d with Ivy Night.” Every Monday, event participants get their hands dirty with “food art” as contestants engage in a competitive cook-off. Be a guest judge for the competition, or get creative with some of your own food art. Tonight’s event invites you to bring out your old cookbooks to swap them for some gently used, “new-to-you” ones in a good old fashioned “Cookbook + Recipe Swap.”
