Celebrate the women in your life (or celebrate yourself!) by attending the Nightwood Theatre’s International Women’s Day Celebration! In its 28th year, this event features performers of every discipline coming together to honour women with an irreverent and energetic evening of performances.

Award-winning Canadian comic, Sandra Battaglini, will keep host this year’s celebration; other participants include key-note speaker Judy Rebick, musicians Shakura S’Aida, Alejandra Ribera, and the Donna Grantis Band; dancer Julia Aplin; theatre performer Judith Thompson; spoken-word performer Lara Bozabalian; and comic Chelsea Manders.

59. Beans and Grains – Cooking Class

Whether you’re a strict vegan, or just want to cut back on your food-costs, using beans and grains in your cooking is a great way to create delicious, nutrient-packed meals that are vegan/vegetarian-friendly and easy on the wallet! The Big Carrot offers a series of vegetarian cooking classes on Monday evenings, and tonight’s class, Beans and Grains, will have you whipping up delicious dishes such as Pinto Bean Cashew Rice Salad, Buckwheat Potato Pancakes, Quinoa Tabouli, and Barley Flake Rice Crispie Squares.

Taught by Nettie Cronish, Natural Food Chef Recipe Developer and Culinary Instructor, you’ll be in good hands as you learn about the value of incorporating beans and grains into your diet. Single Monday evening classes with Nettie are $79.10, start at 7pm and continue until 9:30pm. Bring your own apron, hand towel, and reusable containers to take home leftovers! 58. The Secret Garden

Based on the beloved children’s novel by Frances Hodgson Burnett, The Secret Garden musical production will bring back nostalgic memories of reading the tale of Mary, the young orphan taken in by her extended family on the Yorkshire moors.

When Mary discovers the key to a walled garden on the expansive property that is now her home, her life, and the lives of her family, are changed forever.

The Secret Garden runs until March 19, 2011 at the Royal Alexandra Theatre. Today’s performance starts at 2pm; tickets range from $55.00 (upper balcony, far sides) to $110.00 (orchestra and lower balcony). Children “who are old enough to enjoy theatre performances” are welcome at this musical, so bring the family for an unforgettable foray into The Secret Garden!

55. A Midsummer Night’s Dream

Staged at the Young Centre for the Performing Arts from February 17th until April 15th, A Midsummer Night’s Dream is one of Shakespeare’s most beloved comedies.

Intertwining the worlds of an Athenian court, a troupe of amateur dramatists, and the fairy kingdom, A Midsummer Night’s Dream reminds us that, in the words of character Lysander, “the path of true love never did run smooth.”

Tonight’s performance of A Midsummer Night’s Dream starts at 7:30pm. As an early-bird performance, tickets are $50.86 (including HST) for adults, and $31.65 (including HST) for students. To purchase tickets, go to the Young Centre for the Performing Arts’ website.

54. Jane Ash Poitras: New Acquisitions of Contemporary First Nations Art

The Royal Ontario Museum is pleased to display four recently-acquired original works by one of Canada’s preeminent artists, Jane Ash Poitras.

These new pieces explore the impact of colonialism through the combination of personal and historic imagery, and examine the use of traditional non-Western medicines. The featured works include Buffalo Seed (2004), The Extermination (1997), Potato Peeling 101 to Ethnobotany 101 (2004) and It’s Good for Your Heart (2003).

Jane Ash Poitras has received RCA designation from the Royal Canadian Academy of Arts; of Cree/Dene descent, she continues to observe and participate in the practices of various Native cultures, seeking to share knowledge of the First Nations in her art.

Today (and every Wednesday), admission to the ROM is free from 3:30pm until 5:30pm, so take advantage of your opportunity to check out Jane Ash Poitras’ fantastic works for no cost! 53. Mary Pickford & the Invention of the Movie Star

Though she was celebrated as “America’s Sweetheart,” silent film star Mary Pickford was actually born in Toronto! TIFF pays tribute to the spunky actress who, together with her second husband, Douglas Fairbanks, launched the notion of celebrity culture as we know it today.

The TIFF Bell Lightbox is featuring several Mary Pickford Films as part of “the Invention of the Movie Star” exhibit, including Daddy-Long-Legs, Poor Little Rich Girl, Rebecca of Sunnybrook Farm, and Sparrows. Check the TIFF website for screening times of these films.

52. Family Day @ Fort York

Celebrate Family Day at the birthplace of modern Toronto – Fort York National Historic Site! Once the location of the climax of the Battle of York during the War of 1812, now the Fort encloses the largest collection of War of 1812 buildings in Canada.

Today the Fort is open from 10am until 3pm, so bundle up the kids and discover Toronto’s history! You can get a tour of the fort, the kids can participate in various activities, and everyone can grab a cup of old-fashioned cocoa from the historic Fort York Kitchen. Regular admission applies ($8.61 for adults, $4.31 for seniors and youth, and $3.23 for children). 50. Marilyn Monroe Exhibit

Starting today and continuing until May 15th, 2011, the Marilyn Monroe Exhibit at the McMichael Gallery pays respect to the iconic actress baptized Norma Jeane Baker. Renamed and recreated by Twentieth Century Fox as Marilyn Monroe, Norma Jeane would become a vibrant personality, sex symbol, and cultural phenomenon.

The McMichael Gallery includes approximately 150 works that highlight the innocence of Norma Jeane and the career of Marilyn, highlighting the contrasts between her difficult childhood and vulnerability, and her rise to stardom and status as possibly the most photographed individual of the twentieth century.

Featuring works by Andy Worhol, Allen Jones, Robert Indiana, Henri Cartier-Bresson, Richard Avedon, Douglas Kirkland, and many other artists, the Marilyn Monroe Exhibit has enjoyed popularity in Europe and the United States before making its Canadian debut. Entrance to the McMichael Gallery is $15 for adults and $12 for students and seniors.
