312. Lucy Tasseor Tutsweetok

November 8, 2011

Hailing from Arviat, the most southern community on Nunavut’s mainland, Lucy Tasseor uses stone local to her home. Arviat is close to the geographical centre of Canada where the local stone is a tough grey steatite which is harder than steel tools typically used by Arviat carvers. Tasseor created a unique sculpture style by using an axe to chip at this hard stone, allowing the artist to “communicate essential ideas of form and content with a minimum of elaboration.”

The Lucy Tasseor Tutsweetok exhibit takes place at the Art Gallery of Ontario and features more than 40 works by Tasseor from the 1960s through to the 1990s. For more information, go to www.ago.net.

306. Orpheus and Eurydice

November 2, 2011

A modern reinterpretation of the ancient Greek myth, The Canadian Stage Company presents the one-act ballet Orpheus and Eurydice. Choreographed by Quebec native Marie Chouinard, the show features original music by Louis Dufort and was originally created in February 2008 at the Equilibrio Festival in Rome.

Orpheus and Eurydice

Orpheus and Eurydice is the tail of a musician/poet/prophet who enters the underworld on a mission to rescue his wife, Eurydice, who died from a viper’s bite. The one-act ballet “features multiple versions of the two characters and concerns itself with the most intimate manifestations of the human body.”

305. Make wine/beer at Fermentations!

November 1, 2011

The holiday season may still be over a month away, but if you are interested in making your own wine or beer for gifts, entertaining, or a New Year’s celebration, now is the time to get started! At Fermentations it will take only ten minutes for you to brew a batch of beer, but the fermentation process takes about two weeks. For wine, you can select fresh juice or grapes to get your ideal product, but the fermenting takes about eight weeks, so your wine should be ready just in time for you to ring in 2012 with your very own hand-crafted beverage!

Make wine/beer at Fermentations

Fermentations offers over 35 different styles of beer on their regular menu and can clone most commercial brews and even create beers that exist only in your dreams! Choose from more than 100 different wines – you can even select which country you would like your grapes to come from and decide whether you want a wine that is suited for long-term aging or quick consumption! Imagine the look on your guests’ faces when you tell them that you made the wine or beer they are drinking!

Prices depend on the type of beer or wine you choose to make. A 23 litre batch of beer starts at about $66.50 (about $1 per beer), and wine ranges from about $155 to $182 per batch (26-30 bottles). For more information and to make an appointment to craft your own wine or beer, go to www.fermentations.ca!
